Kdrama Revenant Episode 10 Recap

🎀Continuing from Revenant episode 9 , Gu San-Yeong discovers that the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost is not Lee Mok-Dan. At this moment, he hears his mother’s voice outside the door. Gu San-Yeong initially thought it was the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost but couldn’t resist opening the door. It turns out that his mother came because she was worried about him.

Gu San-Yeong asks his mother to meet during the day as it is dangerous at night. However, this scares his mother because Ku Kang-Mo said something similar in 2002. Yoon Gyeong-Mun later learns about Ku Kang-Mo’s eye condition through Gu San-Yeong and hopes that his mother can understand her father and think about their past happy times.

In 1999, when Ku Kang-Mo bought a big house, Yoon Gyeong-Mun didn’t know how he managed to afford it (it could be possible that Yeom Hae-Sang gave Ku Kang-Mo hush money for buying the house). Meanwhile, Kim Chi-Won obtains information and a camera related to Choi Man-Wol that Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother has been searching for. He also advises Ku Kang-Mo not to get close to Yeom Hae-Sang as it would hurt him psychologically.

🎀Yeom Hae-Sang tries to force her grandmother into revealing which child died back then but her grandmother insists she has already said everything she needed to say~ Before taking his mother home, Gu San-Yeong visits a newly decorated café but demons prevent him from witnessing such a happy moment. This compels Gu San-Yeong to find Yeom Hae-Sang in order to search together for the remaining two items since every time they come across an item they see something resembling memories; piecing together the images from the two remaining items might help them understand the demon better.

So, Yeom Hae-Sang takes Gu San-Yeong to a “Sashimi Restaurant,” where they suspect there might be clues. It is here that Professor Shin Seung-Ju, who despises Ku Kang-Mo, commits suicide in the restroom.

🎀Lee Hong-Sae discovers that the corruption case involving Yeom Jae-Woo was closed due to his sudden death in 1995. When he questions the police officer who handled it at that time, he learns that just a day before his death, Yeom Jae-Woo was weak and had red bruises on his hands while in the hospital.

Furthermore, Lee Hong-Sae also finds out that Yeom Seung-Ok died at the same hospital and at a young age. He uncovers financial ties between Junghyeon Capital and Chan-Ai Hospital; when questioned about it, the director claims to have only followed his wife’s instructions and says that “that child” would eventually die.

When Gu San-Yeong touches a glass bottle they found, he suddenly shouts for water. This is a reaction of demons facing memories because she desperately begged for food or even just a sip of water during those seven days before performing rituals but received heartless words like “Why haven’t you died yet?”

🎀Yeom Hae-Sang doesn’t believe her father committed suicide as she remembers him collapsing at work before passing away. Lee Hong-Sae mentions strange rumors about the hospital since Kim Woo-Jin’s accident; Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandmother intentionally wanted him transferred to Chan-Ai Hospital and eerily said Kim Woo-Jin wouldn’t mind dying anytime soon.

Later on, Kim Woo-Jin dies with his pillow falling onto the floor without anyone seeing anything suspicious except for Kim Chi-Won who refuses to believe what motives Mrs. Yeom might have had. It turns out that in 1999, Kim Woo-Jin accidentally discovered the contents and secrets of the letter Ku Kang-Mo sent to his grandmother, so she had to get rid of him. Kim Chi-Won also mentions that Yeom Jae-Woo always left work before sunset because strange things would happen at night. In 1995, he even witnessed Yeom Jae-Woo eating raw food with a bizarre appetite.

One night, Yeom Jae-Woo unexpectedly said “go die” to Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother. It is strange for someone who loves Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother like Yeom Jae-Woo to say such words. Previously, Yeom Jae-Woo had asked his grandmother not to have a demon inheritance if he had earned enough money. He also knew that his grandmother could eliminate demons using five items and their names.

However, if it was not done properly, it would harm the person trying to eliminate the demon. In the end, Yeom Jae-Woo was killed by the demon (just like how Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost starved to death in the past without eating or drinking for several days).

The next day, Gu San-Yeong woke up with injuries on her hands and found herself touching documents related to fire insurance compensation. Lee Hong-Sae happened to be there discussing his grandmother’s murder case.

Gu San-Yeong mentioned feeling unwell and suddenly her phone rang but she didn’t answer it. Lee Hong-Sae realized that Gu San-Yeong couldn’t see him because her eyes didn’t meet his gaze. Gu San-Yeong broke down saying she couldn’t accept losing her sight inexplicably as she still had many things left to enjoy in life and needed a demon to restore her vision.

Lee Hong-Sae also discovered that Gu San-Yeong experienced memory loss again last night and took out an application form for fire insurance which listed Yoon Gyeong-Mun as the insured party and Gu San-Yeong as the policyholder – meaning if Gu San-Yeong could receive money due to her mother’s death. This revelation devastated Gu San-Yeong as she realized that demons were planning on killing her mother.

Gu San-Yeong became even more determined to eliminate the demon while Yeom Hae-Sang knew that Gu San-Yeong must have been threatened by the demon and couldn’t reveal certain information. However, both Lee Hong-Sae and Yeom Hae-Sang didn’t mind it. Eventually, Gu San-Yeong disclosed that she found a “household register” document with money after Seo Moon-Choon’s death. Yeom Hae-Sang deduced that the demon was Lee Mok-Dan’s sister but they had no clues to reapply for her real name.

Gu San-Yeong mentioned seeing a different colored powder glass bottle being shattered and someone holding a red powder glass bottle going to Yeom Hae-Sang’s house. Just when everyone thought there were no real names of demons to continue investigating, Yeom Hae-Sang thought of the “Defenseless Day,” which would be a safe day where ghosts cannot appear, to go to his grandmother’s house.

Gu San-Yeong went one day earlier to inform his grandmother about this matter. The grandmother didn’t care about Yeom Hae-Sang because in the past, whenever Yeom Seung-Ok wanted to get rid of demons for pleasure or when Yeom Jae-Woo wanted to get rid of demons, Na Byung-Hee intentionally set up traps and killed them together with the demons.

The contents in the safe deposit box were also deliberately switched by his grandmother as part of their agreement – “as long as the demon is alive, she can live.” And the true name of the demon is “Lee Heung-yi.”

Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandmother deliberately concealed the name of the Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost.

In episodes 9 and 10 of Revenant, we learn that the name of the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost is not Lee Mok-Dan. In the final scene of episode ten, it is revealed that the name of the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost is “Lee Hyang-yi”. Grandma had known all along that the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost was not Lee Mok-Dan. When Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother took her and fled, Grandma had already sent Kim Chi-Won to fetch Yeom Hae-Sang.

Kim Chi-Won didn’t understand why at the time, but he truly didn’t know (because he asked Grandma if she died because she killed a demon). As for why Grandma kept hiding the secret about other girls being victimized, her motive was to “prevent Juvenile Ghost from being destroyed” (Grandma made a promise with the demon that as long as it lived, she would live too). Therefore, for Grandma, Yeom Hae-Sang investigating Lee Mok-Dan wasn’t a threat yet. She simply followed this development and only mentioned Lee Mok-Dan’s suffering at that time. So yes, Grandma is truly wicked! 😱😱😱😱😱

Are Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost and Lee Mok-Dan sisters?

Gu San-Yeong said that when she touches objects, she sees different scenes. She believes these are the memories of Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost. If they are memories, then they would be seen from the perspective of Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost:

  • Red hair accessory: Gu San-Yeong saw a little girl (Lee Mok-Dan) sitting in front of a mirror. From her own perspective, she tied the red hair accessory on Lee Mok-Dan’s head. Based on this scene, it seems to confirm that Lee Mok-Dan and Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost are “sisters,” as Yeom Hae-Sang deduced.

  • Black rubber band: Gu San-Yeong saw a “hanging woman” and the sea (this part should correspond to Episode 9 when Revenant Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost possessed Gu San-Yeong’s body and wanted to sleep with Yoon Gyeong-Mun). She mentioned in her dream talk, “Mommy, don’t go, don’t die.” It is likely that her mother committed suicide because she was devastated by losing Lee Mok-Dan.

  • Blue pottery shard: Gu San-Yeong saw Man-Wol outside the window and witnessed someone being killed (this perspective feels like Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost’s own view before being killed or witnessing someone being killed up close). My speculation is that both Yi-hyang-i and Lee Mok-Dan died during the same ritual ceremony. For detailed reasoning, please continue reading further.

  • Glass bottle: When Gu San-Yeong touched the glass bottle, what appeared was “always wanting water.” She said, “I begged them for something to eat; I begged them for a sip of water. I kept begging them desperately. For seven days while I was still alive, I didn’t drink any water; I endured for seven days. But do you know what they said? ‘Why haven’t you died yet?'”

This memory is meant to correspond to the Juvenile Ghost ritual. → The summoning method of Juvenile Ghost mostly starts with kidnapping children, keeping them locked up for several days without food, subjecting them to various tortures until they harbor immense resentment in their hearts. Then, when the child is on the verge of starvation, someone appears before them holding a container or bamboo tube filled with food and lures them closer. It is at this moment that they are killed, allowing their vengeful souls and obsessions to attach themselves to the container. Gu San-Yeong’s memory shows bottles containing different colored powders falling and shattering on the ground. Later, someone appeared at Yeom Hae-Sang’s house carrying a glass bottle with red powder. Based on the half-shadowed figure we saw, it seems like Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost herself brought the red powder to Yeom Hae-Sang’s house (the silhouette of a middle school girl).

Is Lee Mok-Dan a ritual burial object for Juvenile Ghosts?

Furthermore, I would like to update my deduction in this episode. It seems that Lee Mok-Dan was killed during the same Juvenile Ghost ritual as Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost! In order to hold the Juvenile Ghost ritual, children must first be starved to death. However, Lee Mok-Dan was taken directly by the witch to her grandmother’s house for the ritual.

This means that Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost had already been locked up there for seven days before Lee Mok-Dan was abducted again (which is why Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost saw “Man-Wol”). This time point may have been around late May or early June because Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost mentioned surviving for seven days. Then on 6/7, when Lee Mok-Dan was lured and kidnapped to the village feast (where many people were eating at Yeom Seung-Ok’s house), she was killed and became a Juvenile Ghost.

So it is highly likely that Lee Mok-Dan served an important role in the ritual, perhaps as a burial object, especially since her finger was cut off as a sacred body part. (Therefore, based on this point, both Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost and Lee Mok-Dan died at the same time due to the ritual practice. The reason why the moon picture appears in the 1959 graduation album might be because their class wanted to commemorate her by including her drawing.)

  • 🩸June 3rd, 1958: A paper resembling a contract states that Choi Man-Wol received one billion old Korean won for conducting a ceremony. The money came from Junghyeon Trading Company (owned by Yeom Hae-Sang’s family). From this point onwards, it can be assumed that they planned to kidnap Lee Mok-Dan for the ceremony.
  • 🩸June 7th, 1958 – The day of Lee Mok-Dan’s abduction (waxing moon): Gu San-Yeong said, “In exchange for a life, hand over the price that Mok-Dan received.” It was also the day of the village feast where everyone received various items and money. Ku Kang-Mo had a ledger that belonged to the deceased village man (because Ku Kang-Mo helped him at the sanatorium and eventually retrieved his belongings: “Jangjin-Ri ledger”). In the scene, the village man is seen distributing things, and he was also responsible for handling Lee Mok-Dan’s affairs after her death.
  • 🩸June 24th, 1958 – The day of blue porcelain and a corpse (Lee Mok-Dan’s body was sent back for processing and hung on a tree by the village head).

Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost found five things to unlock the seal?

In Revenant Episode 9, there are some hints about why the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost holds grudges. I feel that her resentment is stronger than Lee Mok-Dan’s and there must be a backstory behind it. In this episode, the writer intentionally reveals the demon’s unjust past experiences.

For example, Yoon Gyeong-Mun mentions Gu San-Yeong dreaming and saying “Mom, don’t go, don’t die.” Additionally, when demon and Lee Hong-Sae see a little girl misbehaving towards her mother at an amusement park, they find such behavior annoying as it shows a lack of understanding of true happiness in the present moment. This demonstrates that the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost is deeply unsatisfied with her own death.

As for whether or not the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost wants to use Yeom Hae-Sang and Gu San-Yeong to find these five items to release herself from confinement? After all, burying these objects was meant to seal them away; would unearthing them reverse this sealing process?

However, another possibility is that currently she doesn’t want others to know who she really is (as it could lead to her destruction), but at the same time she seems to be constantly guiding them towards finding these five items (as seen in a previous episode where Yeom Hae-Sang coincidentally finds a piece of blue porcelain elsewhere while Gu San-Yeong hears a voice in his head saying “I found it,” indicating that she wants these five things to be found).

The question remains: what is the purpose of the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost? I personally think there are two possibilities: 1) Perhaps she simply wants to release herself from confinement by uncovering these five items; 2) However, upon further reflection, it seems more complicated than just seeking revenge because in Episode Ten of Revenant when Gu San-Yeong is at his mother’s café, he initially cannot see her until he says, “Just find those five things, right?”

This suggests that the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost’s goal is to find these five items. Moreover, if she only wanted revenge and to release herself from confinement, there would be no need for her to guide them towards finding these objects because she could achieve her revenge now. Therefore, it seems that releasing herself from confinement is not so simple; rather, she wants Gu San-Yeong to touch these five items in order to understand the complete story and shed light on the injustice suffered by both the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost and Lee Mok-Dan. She wants justice for them.

As Yeom Hae-Sang mentioned before, in order to eliminate a demon one must address their grievances. These five items are symbols of the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost’s grievances and hold memories of all injustices done unto her. She needs people to know how deeply unsatisfied she was with what happened to her. However, what will happen once these five items are found?

Ultimately they will be used for “eliminating demons.” But before that happens I believe the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost will deal with her grandmother (after all, there should be some resolution for the antagonist), although proving her grandmother’s crimes might prove difficult. In the end, I think the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost will wait for Yeom Hae-Sang and Gu San-Yeong to use these five items along with her true name in order to eliminate her completely—resolving decades of resentment and dissatisfaction.

After all, I believe it must also be very painful for the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost herself remaining in this world as she witnesses happiness existing here but being unappreciated; this only deepens her own sense of dissatisfaction and suffering just like any human being who lives painfully would want an end to their own life. The Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost probably has similar thoughts.
