Kdrama Revenant Episode 7 Recap
🎀 Kdrama Revenant Episode 7 , Woo-Jin said he knows who turned Gu San-Yeong into this state and asked him to find someone named Choi Man-Wol. When Gu San-Yeong came across the blue porcelain fragments, he saw a scene of a little girl being killed. Gu San-Yeong suspected that Yeom Hae-Sang was hiding something from her, but Yeom Hae-Sang claimed she wasn’t concealing anything.
So Gu San-Yeong had no choice but to investigate what happened to Woo-Jin in order to find Choi Man-Wol. On the other hand, Yeom Hae-Sang learned that her mother met Ku Kang-Mo during a field investigation and before they left, they both requested assistance from a lady skilled in reciting scriptures for mourning children.
On March 17th, 1995, Yeom Hae-Jin (Yeom Hae-Sang’s sibling) also passed away prematurely. This made Yeom Hae-Sang think about how Gu San-Yeong’s siblings suffered the same fate because they were summoning Juvenile Ghosts and believed that “the second child must die.”
🎀 In 1999, Kim Woo-Jin was allowed by Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandmother to live in the mansion with her after his mother’s death. However, as soon as he arrived there, he started rummaging through everything and showed great interest in expensive items.
He even discovered a camera with film (but at this point Kim Woo-Jin was already haunted by greed ghosts). He even stumbled upon a secret warehouse where his grandmother scolded Kim Chi-Won for not quickly investigating the source of a threatening letter (which came from Ku Kang-Mo). Later on, Kim Woo-Jin stole that camera and found information about Choi Man-Wol within it.
🎀 Returning to present time, Kim Chi-Won went to find Lee Hong-Sae in order to uncover what Seo Moon-Choon and Yeom Hae-Sang were up to. Of course, Lee Hong-Sae knew something was amiss. On the other hand, Yeom Hae-Sang believed that her mother and Ku Kang-Mo knew each other, so she thought she could find clues by understanding Ku Kang-Mo.
Seo Moon-Choon gave Yeom Hae-Sang a case report about her mother which included torn pages from Ku Kang-Mo’s notebook and information about the death of a journalist who reported on Lee Mok-Dan.
🎀 It is mentioned that Choi Man-Wol was the most suspicious suspect at the time because police found Lee Mok-Dan’s clothes and fingers in her shrine. However, when Choi Man-Wol was detained, there was knocking on the door. When the police opened it, Choi Man-Wol committed suicide out of fear. The case was closed after this incident, but later on, that journalist also died by suicide.
It was during this time that Yeom Hae-Sang learned that those five items were essential for the ritual. Yeom Hae-Sang traced down Choi Man-Wol’s surviving nephew who revealed that Choi Man-Wol had no children of her own and he had been worshipping her for a long time.
As soon as he saw the red hair accessory, he recognized it as Juvenile Ghosts’ summoning tool since 1958 when Choi Man-Wol gave it to Lee Mok-Dan as a way to mark children who would become Juvenile Ghosts so people would treat them better. The village performed this ritual because they experienced extreme poverty and suffered from famine-related calamities; thus they resorted to summoning Juvenile Ghosts as a solution.
🎀Through the artifacts left by Choi Man-Wol, it was discovered that the notebook contained the name Jangjin-Ri, along with the date 1958/6/3. There was also a paper that seemed to be a contract, stating an amount of ten billion old Korean won.
This indicated that Choi Man-Wol received this money for a ritual, and the money came from Junghyeon Trading Company (which is owned by the Yeom Hae-Sang family). Lee Hong-Sae helped Gu San-Yeong investigate several mysterious student deaths at Kim Woo-Jin’s school during the same period. They went to investigate at the school together, and even though the principal himself knew about Kim Woo-Jin, he found belongings of those deceased students in his locker.
Although the parents forgave Kim Woo-Jin, he later died in a car accident. Gu San-Yeong tried calling Kim Woo-Jin’s home specifically but got no answer; however, when they mentioned Choi Man-Wol on their call with someone on Grandma Street, she screamed as if going insane. It was then revealed by Lee Hong-Sae that Grandma is Yeom Seung-Ok’s wife and therefore has connections to Yeom Hae-Sang’s family. This made Gu San-Yeong feel like Yeom Hae-Sang had been hiding too many things.
🎀Seo Moon-Choon discovered that two corrupt detectives involved in bribery closed off investigations into this case back in 1958. Junghyeon Trading Company was formerly known as Junghyeon Capital and Yeom Seung-Ok became its first-generation representative after taking over funds from problematic sources within Junghyeon Trading Company itself.
He saved what was almost a bankrupt company and eventually established large-scale lending operations which led to today’s Junghyeon Capital. However, Junghyeon Capital is known as the “Sanjeokwon” (Three Paths River) because those who hindered the company’s development, such as investigating prosecutors and representatives of competing companies, all died.
🎀Gu San-Yeong combined her own visions with the events of 1958 and deduced that Lee Mok-Dan was killed at a location with Junghyeon Trading Company’s signboard. This confirmed her suspicion that Yeom Seung-Ok was involved in what happened in 1958. At this point, the evil spirit Juvenile Ghost began showing Gu San-Yeong images of Lee Mok-Dan and revealed how she was deceived by Choi Man-Wol in the past.
It became clear that Choi Man-Wol performed these rituals to summon Juvenile Ghost out of greed. The demon has been inherited through generations but can grant their desires. Yeom Hae-Sang uncovered all the truth and confronted Grandma about it; she admitted to actually killing Lee Mok-Dan. When Yeom Seung-Ok touched the red hair accessory, he became possessed by a demon, which ironically allowed their company to thrive without any competitors.
🎀Grandma mentioned that after Yeom Hae-Sang’s father, it would be his turn to be taken over by the demon; however, due to his mother’s intervention, Yeom Hae-Sang remained safe. Gu San-Yeong saw Yeom Hae-Sang at the door and blamed their family for committing such evil deeds. She despised how they enjoyed wealth and prosperity through such means.
Of course, when Yeom Hae-Sang learned about this truth, he didn’t know how to face it either. In 1999, Ku Kang-Mo wanted Na Byung-Hee to hand over the demon and mentioned an elder from Jangjin-Ri who held evidence against Na Byung-Hee and her husband’s crimes.
At that time, Ku Kang-Mo knew about the method his mother told him to eliminate the demon but didn’t know where to find it. However, Grandma was unwilling to give it up. Gu San-Yeong already knows the name and story of the evil spirit Juvenile Ghost and decides to send the demon where it belongs. But how will she and Yeom Hae-Sang find the true form of the demon?
Kdrama Revenant Episode 7 review & 7 highlights,Explained
Kim Woo-Jin is Kim Chi-Won’s son
In Kdrama ‘Revenant’ Episode 7 , there is a scene where Yeom Hae-Sang brings a red hair accessory to show her grandmother. This scene subtly reveals some information and suspense. In the fifth episode of Revenant, there is a demon named Kim Woo-Jin who covets Gu San-Yeong’s youthfulness and appears at Yeom Hae-Sang’s house.
From the photos, it seems that he is also the son of Kim Chi-Won, who is a driver. In the fifth episode of Revenant, Kim Woo-Jin mentioned that his death was caused by Yeom Hae-Sang, but it is still unknown how his death occurred. However, based on the content of the sixth episode of Revenant, it can be inferred that Kim Woo-Jin covets Gu San-Yeong’s youthfulness because he passed away early on. Looking at past photos with Kim Chi-Won, time seems to have stopped when he was still in high school, so he should have died during his high school years.
Why did Kim Woo-Jin become a ghost?
“The hungry ghost realm is one of the six realms of reincarnation in Buddhism. Due to their insatiable hunger, hungry ghosts constantly crave and never feel satisfied. They are often seen as malevolent spirits that harm others until their desires are fulfilled.
Hungry ghosts are created by human greed and desire, and they cannot be eliminated. Yeom Hae-Sang mentioned a friend who couldn’t resist his own constant craving for what others had, eventually leading him to commit suicide. Could this friend referred to by Yeom Hae-Sang be Kim Woo-Jin? It seems likely based on the events in Episode 7 of ‘Revenant’ , where it is revealed that Kim Woo-Jin was already fixated on expensive items when he moved into Yeom Hae-Sang’s house in 1999, fueling his own greed and becoming possessed by a hungry ghost.
The character of Kim Woo-Jin becoming a hungry ghost serves the purpose of driving Gu San-Yeong’s investigation into Choi Man-Wol’s storyline and connecting it with the origin of the Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost from the past. In the final scene of ‘Revenant’ Episode 6, Kim Woo-Jin claims ignorance but mentions seeing the “name” of someone who turned Gu San-Yeong into a demon (the name he saw came from Choi Man-Wol’s information found in Yeom Hae-Sang’s father’s drawer along with a camera). This camera is linked to the photos shown to Gu San-Yeong by the Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost in Episode 6.
Initially, I thought that Kim Woo-Jin would become a hungry ghost due to his grandmother’s involvement. However, based on this episode’s content, it appears that his intense greed alone led him towards tragedy as he became possessed by a hungry ghost. Inadvertently, he also stumbled upon something he shouldn’t have seen – his grandmother’s secret – which is hinted at by the film negatives he took in ‘Revenant’ Episode 6, resembling an altar-like location. Therefore, it seems that he has discovered this secret storage room.”
Why does the Yeom Hae-Sang family summon the Juvenile Ghost?
Kim Woo-Jin saw the name “Choi Man-Wol,” but he didn’t know who that was. In episode 6 of Revenant, I thought Kim Woo-Jin became a hungry ghost because he accidentally entered the forbidden area while investigating his mother’s death with Yeom Hae-Sang. However, in episode 7 of Revenant, there was a slight difference. When Kim Woo-Jin arrived at this house, he was immediately haunted by a hungry ghost due to his overwhelming greed (his eyes also turned red).
But where did the hungry ghost come from? It originated from the strong greed within Kim Woo-Jin’s heart. However, I don’t know if it is related to Grandma’s room because Grandma is also a very greedy person. The sequence of events when Kim Woo-Jin first arrived at this house was “Grandma’s room” → Yeom Hae-Sang’s father’s room → seeing the warehouse (at this moment, his eyes briefly turned red, but it wasn’t an Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost; it was a hungry ghost).
However, this warehouse is where Lee Mok-Dan died. Then Kim Woo-Jin went back to take the camera (but saw Choi Man-Wol’s name; it seems that Yeom Hae-Sang’s father also investigated Choi Man-Wol).
In those developed films found by Gu San-Yeong, there were photos taken together with images of “Hungry Ghost Path.” In episode 6 of Revenant, I guessed that Kim Woo-Jin mistakenly entered the forbidden area and in this episode’s warehouse scene I think should be connected to Lee Mok-Dan’s murder location in the past because both places have red brick walls which are associated with wizardry.
This can also explain why Gu San-Yeong mentioned “the demon showed me ‘Hungry Ghost Path'” in this episode. Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost must have wanted Gu San-Yeong to know something, and the Hungry Ghost Path is related to Kim Woo-Jin. So, my intuition tells me that Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost wants to tell Gu San-Yeong that it originated from Yeom Hae-Sang’s house. Therefore, Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost wants to involve Yeom Hae-Sang in order to find the source of resentment.
I think usually these kinds of rituals are very secretive, so Kim Woo-Jin saw it because he accidentally entered the forbidden area. Therefore, Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost wants Gu San-Yeong to know about Kim Woo-Jin’s role because through him they can find the originator of resentment at a higher level.
As for who this originator might be, it could be Grandma and Grandpa; perhaps Kim Chi-Won covered up this secret for Grandma and went from being a handyman in their house to becoming the vice president now!? Based on what we learned in this episode, Junghyeon Trading Company gave Choi Man-Wol a large sum of money. So Kim Chi-Won would be willing to help cover up Grandma’s secret probably due to his own greed.
As for why Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandparents wanted Choi Man-Wol for their ritual? Their motive was to make their Junghyeon capital even richer. Choi Man-Wol mentioned that they had inherited demons through generations but having demons around them fulfills their desires which stem from greediness.
However, there is always a corresponding price they must pay (and I believe “the second child must die” is one such price like Yeom Hae-Sang losing his siblings). Lee Hong-Sae said that Junghyeon Capital is referred as “Sanzu River,” where those who hinder Junghyeon Capital or represent competitors all end up dead. Therefore summoning Juvenile Ghost was done because of the greed of Na Byung-Hee and Yeom Seung-Ok.
Choi Man-Wol got money from Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandmom?
Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother, why does she have those dangerous things? Or is it that Yeom Hae-Sang is being haunted by the Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost? ‘Revenant’ Episode 6 overturned my reasoning from episode 5. Grandma is not a witch or a descendant (because Choi Man-Wol has no children), but rather seems to be the mastermind behind the sacrifice ritual that Choi Man-Wol performed.
According to the content of ‘Revenant’ episode 6, Choi Man-Wol performed this ritual on June 3rd, 1958 because she received a large sum of money. However, compared to Choi Man-Wol, “the person who gave the money” (Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandparents) should be more responsible for it~ (The receipt also mentions “Junghyeon Trading Company,” which is Grandma’s family Junghyeon Capital Group. At that time in 1958, Yeom Seung-Ok was its representative and Grandma was Yeom Seung-Ok’s wife).
In episode 6 of ‘Revenant’ , there was a scene where Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandmother saw those things and got angry. It seemed like an embarrassed anger reaction. Moreover, Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandmother appears to be a calm person; if she gets angry immediately, it means these two things were once significant matters for her and are considered ominous objects or something similar.
Yeom Hae-Sang inherited demon from his father; his grandmother mentioned that he should become the next host for demon. However, Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother tried to stop this with a ritual. Therefore, it wasn’t because of Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost that Yeom Hae-Sang’s father died; he appeared to die naturally but had demon inside him which would transfer to Yeom-Ha Sang (no wonder he fell ill at his father’s funeral). However, it was disrupted by his mother, so Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother was attacked and killed by the demon.
This also reminds me of ‘Revenant’ episode 6 when young Yeom Hae-Sang immediately went to ask Grandma why his mother died. And now, when Yeom Hae-Sang discovered the forbidden rope incident, he again went straight to Grandma. Why did he choose to ask Grandma instead of others? It means that deep down inside, Yeom Hae-Sang believes that Grandma knows about the Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost.
In ‘Revenant’ episode 6 , Yeom Hae-Sang told Gu San-Yeong that “as long as we find the specific person responsible for injustice, we can eliminate the demon.” So Evil Spirit Juvenile Ghost involved Yeom Hae-Sang because it was actually caused by Yeom-Ha Sang’s family (grandfather), making them responsible for the tragedy in Jangjin-Ri.
But what Choi Man-Wol saw was a manifestation of demon in human form -Yeom Seung-Ok (because before Choi Man-Wol got caught she had already completed her ritual and passed on demon to him). Because Choi Man-Wol’s ritual exposed the conspiracy behind Junghyeon Capital (after all, two investigating detectives were dismissed at that time; evidence showed they took bribes to close the case without investigation), therefore upon hearing what Yeom Seung-Ok said, demon made Choi Man-Wol commit suicide. The motive is obviously not letting law enforcement discover witchcraft practices.
Yeom Hae-Sang’s home warehouse = the place where Lee Mok-Dan was killed in the past?
Grandma is indeed not Choi Man-Wol, but she is not a descendant of witches. Instead, her family has a tradition of seeking the help of witches for rituals. In episode 7 of ‘Revenant’ , it is revealed that Yeom Hae-Sang’s grandfather, Yeom Seung-Ok, was the first president of Junghyeon Capital. Grandma is also Yeom Seung-Ok’s wife.
The reason behind Yeom Hae-Sang’s father’s death seems to be related to his investigation into someone named Choi Man-Wol and his possession of a camera and photos. As for the warehouse in Yeom Hae-Sang’s house, it is where Lee Mok-Dan was murdered in the past. Here is my analysis of the death case (this is my current deduction which may change with new clues later on):
- Yeom Hae-Sang suffered an untimely death (also when his father inherited Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost) around 1995: During this period, Ku Kang-Mo and Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother should have known each other. Madam Jin mentioned that Ku Kang-Mo and Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother met during field investigations. However, at that time Ku Kang-Mo didn’t fully believe what she said.
- In 1995, Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother passed away: I think even before Yeom Hae-Sang’s father inherited Juvenile Ghost, his mother had been searching for ways to prevent the demon from possessing him. This could explain my previous question about why she knew how to break the curse within days after her funeral because she had been investigating for many years (she also learned about Madam Jin through Ku Kang-Mo).
That’s why she asked Madam Jin to recite scriptures for her children if anything happened to her during mourning – mourning specifically for Yeon Hae-Jin. At this point, I believe Ku Kang-Mo already knew about Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost but didn’t have much research on it. Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother buried those things to destroy the demon, but when Yeom Hae-Sang opened the door, Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost killed his mother who was trying to eliminate it.
Ku Kang-Mo was being haunted by a demon.
🎀 Ku Kang-Mo and Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother knew each other. They knew that Na Byung-Hee and her husband summoned the Juvenile Ghost to establish their career. However, at that time, Ku Kang-Mo didn’t really believe in Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother. It was only later when he pursued his studies that he started investigating. It wasn’t until 1999 that he confirmed Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother died trying to stop the demon.
🎀 In February 1997, Ku Kang-Mo published a paper titled “Folk Beliefs in Korea” which mentioned the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost for the first time. However, nobody paid attention to his theories and ideas, so it was ignored by the academic community.
🎀 In 1998, Ku Kang-Mo met Yoon Gyeong-Mun who took him on field investigations. They discussed incidents where children from Jangjin-Ri kept dying. That year, after publishing one book, Ku Kang-Mo focused more on investigating the Jangjin-Ri case rather than writing more books.
🎀 In 1999, high school student Kim Woo-Jin was brought to Yeom Hae-Sang’s house by Kim Chi-Won for the first time. He discovered a warehouse with Yeom Hae-Sang’s father’s camera and Choi Man-Wol’s investigation materials. However, due to his own greediness, Kim Woo-Jin also became entangled with hungry ghosts. That year, Ku Kang-Mo hoped Na Byung-Hee would hand over the demon but of course she wouldn’t because it could strengthen her family business empire. But for Ku Kang-Mo himself, he knew how terrifying and dangerous Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost was so he demanded Na Byung-Hee give up the demon.
🎀 In 2000, “Xu Shangxun” committed suicide in the restroom of a raw fish restaurant in southern Jiangnan. He was an authoritative professor in the Chinese Department at a university but wrote content in his expert column stating that he believed Professor Ku Kang-Mo was a cult leader and fraud. He despised Professor Ku Kang-Mo.
🎀 Before the due date on February 25, 2002, Lee Ok-Ja + Yoon Gyeong-Mun’s second child died. With only two months left until Gu San-Yeong’s expected delivery date, Ku Kang-Mo told Yoon Gyeong-Mun, “The second child will die, it will die by my hands.” Later at Baecigok Valley, Yoon Gyeong-Mun’s mother would be eliminated by Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost.
🎀 In 2007, Lee Cixi worked as a civil servant under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. She graduated from the university where Ku Kang-Mo taught and had taken his folklore class. In other words, she was one of Ku Kang-Mo’s students.
🎀 In 2022, as a library administrator who passed away recently had seen Ku Kang-Mo before her death.
🎀 Presently after Ku Kang-Mo’s death, Gu San-Yeong is haunted by Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost which involves Yeom Hae-Sang: The farewell letter left behind says “Please give my daughter San-Yeong the hairband inside the wooden box on my desk.”
🎀 Presently Grandma has been killed by Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost
The method to eliminate demons is hidden in Ku Kang-Mo’s thesis.
In this episode, ‘Revenant’ has already consolidated and confirmed five items that can eliminate the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost. However, there is a slight change in my previous reasoning about Revenant. Let’s talk about the methods to eliminate demons first: originally, I thought Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother was asked by the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost to dig out those things. But in Episode 5 of Revenant, it shows that they were “buried”.
So when Revenant mentions in Episode 5 that “only the aura of the victim can suppress the aura of the Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost-infested items,” it means that what Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost did was actually seeking revenge on the people in the village, just as we deduced in Episode 4 of ‘Revenant’ . This point should be correct~ Just like what Gu San-Yeong said, “Lee Mok-Dan, I’m sure that child is a demon. If I went through something like that, even if I became a demon myself, I would want to seek revenge on those people.”
But how should we interpret Ku Kang-Mo’s statement in his thesis? “Only the aura of victims can suppress items filled with Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost’s aura.” Through Episode 5 of ‘Revenant’ revealing Yeom Hae-Sang’s mother burying these five things instead of digging them out, we can infer that other things might have been buried as well; only red hair accessory may not have been buried in time because Yeom Hae-Sang opened the door and then Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost killed her mother.
So now it seems certain that if these five things are buried at specific locations, they can seal demons away. However, someone must die near where these buried objects are located~ This seems to correspond to Ku Kang-Mo’s statement: “Only the aura of victims can suppress items filled with Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost’s aura.” Therefore, by burying these things in the ground, the aura of the victims who died here can suppress the aura of items infested with Evil spirit Juvenile Ghost’s aura (such as grudges on the red hair accessory).
